Reading the Radar

Reflectivity shows rain and hail. Velocity shows wind blowing toward or away from the radar. Rotation shows up as bright green right next to bright red (a couplet). Hail marks where the radar thinks hail is falling (red). Rain 1 hr and Storm total are radar rain estimates. The TDAL and TDFW airport radars (purple dots) sit right next to Dallas and scan about every minute, so they see low-level rotation over the city that KFWS can miss. Velocity only works for one radar at a time, so pick a site. Single-radar data comes straight from the NWS radar server; the all-radars view uses the same RainViewer mosaic as FlightMapWX. Each site scans on its own schedule, every 2 to 10 minutes.
